A. Proverbs Bible Study Questions

1. In general what main idea do we derive from proverb(s)

• Instruction, truth, wisdom, thought through ideas in brief

2. In your own words what do you think or understand is the main theme or purpose of the book of proverbs?

• Verses 2-6 explain the purpose of the book of Proverbs [to give a course of instruction in wisdom, preparation for life and the way of life God’s way. Israel’s contribution to wisdom literature was to place all wisdom in the context of faith in the LORD i.e. proverbs 1 v 7 is the central idea of the book]

3. What similarities do we notice in the way the ideas are connected and are flowing in verses 2-4? And what implication and role are they serving?

• The joining conjunctions to in the KJV and for in the NIV i.e. for attaining wisdom and discipline, for understanding words of insights etc

• They Join the idea, purpose and reason brought about, by proverbs

4. What idea do we vividly see as the result of proverbs verse 2 and what further idea again do we see as a result of the second element verse 3-4

• Proverbs----wisdom------discretion/judgment/understanding/prudence

5. What people or age group is referred to in verse 4b and what is your comment to this idea?

• Young man, the simple (inexperienced) because they are trial and error people without experience back up. [ Everyone is doing it syndrome]

6. What change in flow do we notice in verse 5?

• Wisdom is a perpetual thing which we can never exhaust which even the wise ought to continue seeking! It is that important [it is like a skill which we attain and keep perfecting]

7. What idea can we derive from the words “hear”/ “listen”? in verse 5

• Wisdom is attainable more through listening that much talking (therefore we need to be constantly engaged in listening)

8. What idea do you see and understand in from verse 6 in relation to verse 5?

• It explains and identifies some of the things which a person who would have attained wisdom would be able to comprehend and discern [ i.e. proverb, parable, riddles and sayings]

9. What can you say about verse 7? And what implication does it have to the idea of wisdom and the process of attaining it?

• It is the central focus of verses 1-7 and the basic ingredient in acquiring practical wisdom for life. Even though some form of wisdom can be acquired without God, TRUE wisdom depends on knowledge, submission and reverence of God,

“To know something but not to know God OVERTURNS the VALUE of acquiring and having knowledge in the first place”

B. Reflection and Application
• Do I see the significance of attaining wisdom based in God as a young person living in a world filled with various sorts of APPEALING AND MISLEADING advices such as the media and peer influence?

• If so how can I do so consistently and faithfully?

Is there anyone free to briefly share? Now or first thing next week
